Pool coping is the capstone that runs around the edge of your pool shell. Few decisions affect how a pool reads, underfoot and from a distance, more than the coping profile you choose. At Artisan Exterior, drop-edge coping is one of the most requested upgrades from clients renovating an existing pool or finishing a new one, because it solves a real problem: it hides the raw edge of the pool shell and its fixing bed, so all you see is a single, clean line of stone. 


What is Drop-Edge Pool Coping? 

Drop-edge coping is a profile where the paver's front face extends down past the pool shell in one continuous piece, rather than sitting flush with a separate trim strip fixed underneath. The result reads as one thick, monolithic slab of stone framing the water, even though the paver itself may only be 20-30mm thick.

Single-Piece v Mitred: What's the Difference?

Single-piece drop-edge pavers are cut and dropped as one piece, with no visible joint between the top surface and the face. This is the more durable option: with no laminated join, there's nothing to delaminate under constant pool-water exposure and Australian UV, and it copes better with the seasonal expansion and contraction fibreglass pools go through. 

Mitred drop-edge coping - more common in porcelain - uses a precision-cut rebate to join the top and face pieces at a clean 45-degree angle. It's a contemporary, architectural look, well suited to porcelain's engineered consistency, and easier to source in custom drop depths.

Choosing the stone 
  • Bluestone - dense basalt, cool underfoot even in full sun, and slip-resistant when honed. Our most requested option for family pools. 

  • Travertine - warm honey and ivory tones, a naturally pitted texture that doesn't hold heat, and a barefoot-friendly surface for entertaining. 

  • Granite - very low porosity and minimal sealing, a good call if you want a low-maintenance coping without needing travertine's softness. 

  • Porcelain - near-zero porosity and batch-consistent colour, and where most of our mitred drop-edge work happens. 

Whichever material you choose, ask about the slip rating (R-rating) for the specific finish - it's the one spec that matters most around a pool edge, and it's worth naming on your quote, not just assuming.

Sizes and Custom Drops 

We stock drop-edge coping in two standard formats - 800x400x20mm and 600x400x30mm - in natural stone, with mitred rebate drops customisable from 40mm to 200mm to suit your pool shell depth. Talk to our team early if your project needs a custom drop; it's easier to specify before the pool shell is poured than to retrofit afterwards. 

Why it's Worth the Investment 

Drop-edge coping costs more than a laminated join at the same nominal thickness, but is typically comparable in price to non-drop-edge alternatives once the labour saved on a cleaner install is factored in - and it holds its value better over the life of the pool, because there's no laminated edge to fail. It's a genuine, durable upgrade to how the whole pool area presents, not just a finishing touch.
